The Federal Government has opened an online application portal for admission into federal technical colleges across the country, marking a significant move toward strengthening technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Nigeria.
The development was announced on Monday by the Federal Ministry of Education, which confirmed that the portal is now live and accessible to prospective students seeking admission into government-owned technical colleges for the forthcoming academic session.
According to the ministry, the initiative is part of a broader strategy to reposition technical education as a key driver of national development, industrial growth, and job creation. The government said it is targeting young Nigerians who may not necessarily pursue conventional university education but possess the interest and aptitude for practical, skill-based learning.
In a statement, the ministry explained that candidates will be able to apply for a wide range of programmes, including electrical installation and maintenance, mechanical engineering craft, automobile technology, welding and fabrication, building construction, plumbing, carpentry, ICT, and other vocational trades critical to national infrastructure and industrial expansion.
“The reopening of the portal underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to producing a skilled workforce capable of meeting local and global labour market demands,” the statement read. “Technical colleges remain vital to our education ecosystem, especially in addressing unemployment and promoting self-reliance among youths.”
Education officials noted that the application process has been fully digitised to enhance transparency, efficiency, and equal access. Applicants are required to submit their details online, select preferred institutions and programmes, and upload relevant academic credentials. The ministry added that no physical submission of forms would be required at any stage of the application.
Admission, according to the guidelines, will be strictly merit-based, while also taking into account federal character and inclusiveness to ensure fair representation across states and regions.
The Federal Government also reiterated plans to improve the standard of technical education nationwide through sustained investment in infrastructure, modern equipment, curriculum upgrades, and continuous training for instructors. Recent reforms, the ministry said, are designed to align technical college curricula with industry needs and emerging technologies.
Stakeholders in the education sector have described the move as timely, noting that it could help decongest universities while providing practical alternatives for young people seeking employable skills. They also called for sustained funding and private sector collaboration to ensure the long-term success of technical colleges.
Parents and guardians have equally been urged to encourage students with technical interests to take advantage of the opportunity, as technical and vocational careers continue to gain relevance in Nigeria’s evolving economy.
