UNILAG Produces 500 New Engineers for Lagos NSE

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has inducted 500 of its engineering graduates into the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Lagos Branch, in a ceremony that highlighted the university’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s engineering and technological manpower.

The induction ceremony, which took place at the J.F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium, UNILAG, brought together university management, senior members of the NSE, academic staff, industry professionals, parents, and the graduating engineers. It marked the formal transition of the graduates from academic training into the professional engineering community.

Addressing the inductees, the Chairman of the NSE Lagos Branch described the occasion as a critical step in their professional journey, noting that NSE induction is not merely ceremonial but a gateway to responsibility, accountability, and lifelong learning. He urged the new engineers to uphold the highest standards of professional ethics, competence, and discipline in their practice.

According to him, Nigeria’s growing infrastructural, energy, manufacturing, and digital needs place enormous responsibility on young engineers. He challenged the inductees to see themselves as problem-solvers and innovators capable of driving sustainable development, industrial growth, and global competitiveness.

In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, UNILAG, expressed pride in the graduates, stating that the induction of such a large number of engineers reflects the faculty’s consistent commitment to academic excellence, practical training, and research-driven learning. He noted that UNILAG continues to align its engineering curriculum with global best practices and industry needs.

“The induction into the Nigerian Society of Engineers signifies that our graduates have met the required academic and professional standards. We are confident that they are well equipped to compete locally and internationally,” the dean said.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, represented by a senior official, congratulated the inductees and emphasized the importance of professionalism in nation-building. He reiterated the university’s support for partnerships with professional bodies such as the NSE, describing such collaborations as vital to bridging the gap between theory and practice.

The vice-chancellor further encouraged the graduates to pursue innovation, entrepreneurship, and postgraduate training, while also remaining adaptable in a rapidly changing technological landscape.

A keynote lecture delivered during the event focused on the evolving role of engineers in the digital age, touching on emerging fields such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, smart infrastructure, and sustainable engineering. The speaker advised the inductees to embrace continuous professional development and leverage technology to remain relevant in the global engineering space.

Speaking on behalf of the inductees, one of the newly inducted engineers expressed gratitude to the university management, lecturers, and parents for their support throughout their academic journey. He described the induction as a proud moment and a strong motivation to contribute meaningfully to national development.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers induction is a prerequisite for graduates seeking professional recognition and advancement in Nigeria. It also serves as a pathway toward corporate membership of the NSE and registration with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

With the induction of 500 new engineers, UNILAG has once again reaffirmed its position as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions for engineering education and professional development, contributing significantly to the country’s pool of skilled technical professionals.
