A Federal High Court has directed the University of Ibadan (UI) to immediately reopen the student portal of Bello, a student whose access had been reportedly blocked following a disciplinary issue. The ruling, delivered earlier this week, emphasized the importance of upholding students’ rights within academic institutions and ensuring fair administrative processes.
According to court documents, Bello had approached the court after being unable to access his student portal, a situation that prevented him from completing crucial academic and registration activities. His counsel argued that the university’s action violated his right to education and due process, as no formal communication or hearing had been granted before the restriction was imposed.
In its judgment, the court held that the university failed to follow established procedures before taking punitive action. The presiding judge described the decision to block Bello’s access as “unjust and procedurally improper,” ordering UI to restore full access to his academic records and online services without further delay.
The ruling has sparked discussions within the academic community about the need for transparency and accountability in university disciplinary measures. Student unions and rights advocates have hailed the decision as a landmark case reinforcing the principle that institutions of higher learning must operate within the bounds of fairness and the law.
As of press time, the University of Ibadan has not issued an official statement regarding the court’s directive. However, the judgment is expected to set a precedent for how Nigerian universities handle student-related disputes going forward.
