Vice Chancellor of Bingham University, Professor Haruna Kuje Ayuba, has called on Nigerian academics to move beyond theory and develop practical solutions to the nation’s deepening economic challenges.
Speaking at the university’s academic symposium in Karu, Nasarawa State, Ayuba emphasized that the responsibility of rebuilding the economy does not rest solely on government, but also on intellectuals whose research and innovations can drive sustainable development.
“Our nation is at a crossroads,” he said. “The time has come for universities to take the lead in providing research-based answers to unemployment, inflation, and poor productivity. Scholars must think beyond the classroom and become architects of real change.”
Ayuba urged lecturers to focus their research on entrepreneurship, technology, and agricultural innovation that can help revive key sectors of the economy. He also called for stronger collaboration between academia, industry, and government to ensure that ideas generated in universities translate into policies and products that benefit society.
“Education must not be limited to theories and citations,” he added. “It should inspire problem-solving and national transformation. If our research does not address the realities of our people, then we are failing in our duty as intellectuals.”
The vice chancellor reaffirmed Bingham University’s commitment to fostering research and innovation that align with national priorities, stressing that the university will continue to support faculty members working on projects that address pressing economic and social issues.
