The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the prolonged delay in appointing a substantive Vice Chancellor for North-West University (NWU), accusing the institution’s governing authorities of administrative stagnation and lack of transparency.
In a statement released on Monday, ASUU condemned what it described as “unnecessary and politically motivated” delays, warning that the leadership vacuum could derail academic progress and institutional stability.
“It is unacceptable that months after the expiration of the former VC’s tenure, the university is still being run by an acting leadership without any clear timeline for a permanent appointment,” said a spokesperson for ASUU. “This uncertainty breeds inefficiency and threatens the morale of staff and students alike.”
The union also alleged that undue interference from external forces may be influencing the delay, calling for the federal government and relevant stakeholders to ensure the selection process remains fair and merit-based.
North-West University has been under interim leadership since [insert former VC’s exit date], with the selection process for a new Vice Chancellor reportedly stalled due to internal disagreements and procedural bottlenecks.
ASUU warned that failure to resolve the issue promptly could lead to industrial actions, urging authorities to act in the best interest of the academic community.
