Babcock Bids Farewell to Prof. Tayo After Transformative Tenure, Celebrates Unprecedented Academic Milestones

In an atmosphere filled with pride, gratitude, and reflection, Babcock University has officially marked the end of an era as Professor Ademola S. Tayo concludes his highly impactful tenure as Vice Chancellor. After nearly a decade of service, Prof. Tayo leaves behind a towering legacy characterized by academic advancement, institutional growth, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

At a colorful valedictory ceremony held on the university’s serene Ilishan-Remo campus, tributes poured in from faculty, alumni, students, governing council members, and leaders in Nigeria’s higher education sector, all honoring a man whose tenure has significantly reshaped the trajectory of the Seventh-day Adventist-owned institution.

One of the defining highlights of Prof. Tayo’s administration was the record-breaking number of graduates produced during his tenure. Most notably, the university conferred 217 doctoral degrees (PhDs) and celebrated 241 first-class undergraduate graduates — both unprecedented in the university’s history.

These figures reflect the strategic emphasis placed on research, academic rigor, and student performance under Prof. Tayo’s leadership, setting a new benchmark not only for Babcock but for private universities across Nigeria.

A Legacy of Visionary Leadership

Professor Ademola Tayo assumed office as the Vice Chancellor of Babcock University in 2015, at a time when Nigeria’s tertiary education sector was grappling with issues such as quality assurance, global competitiveness, and infrastructural limitations.

Over the past ten years, Prof. Tayo spearheaded numerous initiatives that elevated the university’s status, both nationally and internationally. These included:

  • Expansion of Academic Programs: Under his leadership, Babcock launched several new programs across disciplines, including doctoral programs in Public Health, Law, and Engineering.
  • Postgraduate Development: The School of Postgraduate Studies grew significantly, with increased funding, faculty training, and international collaboration, culminating in the highest number of PhD graduates in any academic session.
  • Digital Transformation: Prof. Tayo led the university’s adoption of e-learning platforms, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring academic continuity and innovation in teaching delivery.
  • Infrastructure Growth: His administration commissioned new faculty buildings, student hostels, a modern library extension, and a state-of-the-art innovation hub.
  • Research and Innovation: Research output increased significantly, and the university gained visibility in international academic circles through conferences, publications, and partnerships.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Chinedu Anyanwu, Dean of the School of Management Sciences, described Prof. Tayo’s era as “a golden age of stability and progress,” noting that his people-centered leadership style “inspired confidence and performance at every level of the university.”

Academic Excellence Redefined

The production of 241 first-class graduates in a single session is a reflection of not just academic rigor but of an enabling environment that nurtures talent and rewards diligence.

“I feel incredibly proud to graduate in this historic class,” said Olamide Akintunde, a First-Class graduate in Computer Science. “Prof. Tayo’s policies, especially those that promoted mentorship and hands-on learning, played a huge role in shaping our academic success.”

The 217 PhD graduates represent a significant milestone in Babcock’s vision to become a research-intensive university. According to the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Abiola Ogunsanwo, the university’s increased investment in faculty development, research funding, and student support structures has paid off tremendously.

“The numbers are important,” Prof. Ogunsanwo said, “but beyond that, we’re proud of the quality of scholarship our PhD graduates are producing — research that addresses national challenges and contributes to global knowledge.”

National Recognition and Global Footprint

During Prof. Tayo’s tenure, Babcock University consistently ranked among Nigeria’s top private universities, earning recognition for its commitment to ethical education, curriculum relevance, and graduate employability. The university also expanded its international partnerships with institutions in North America, Europe, and other parts of Africa, further exposing its students and faculty to global best practices.

In 2021, Babcock was named the “Best Private University in Nigeria” by the Nigerian Association of Private Universities (NAPU), a testament to the impact of Prof. Tayo’s leadership.

The Vice Chancellor also oversaw the integration of sustainable development goals (SDGs) into the university’s policy framework, promoting environmental responsibility, gender inclusion, and community development.

A New Chapter

As the institution prepares to welcome new leadership, the focus is now on sustaining and expanding the gains of the past decade. Members of the Governing Council expressed optimism that the foundations laid during Prof. Tayo’s administration will continue to bear fruit in the years ahead.

Chairman of the Council, Elder Bassey Effiong, stated: “Professor Tayo has set a standard of excellence that will guide the university for generations. His integrity, innovation, and commitment to the university’s mission are deeply appreciated.”

In his farewell remarks, Prof. Tayo expressed gratitude to the university community, the church, and stakeholders for their support throughout his tenure. He reaffirmed his belief in Babcock’s mission and pledged to continue serving in academic and advisory capacities wherever possible.

“I came into this office with a vision to build on what my predecessors had done and move the university to greater heights,” he said. “I leave fulfilled, knowing that together, we have planted seeds that will yield a rich harvest for the future.”

As the curtain falls on this historic tenure, Babcock University stands at a pivotal moment — one shaped by a legacy of academic breakthroughs, institutional transformation, and enduring impact, thanks to the unwavering leadership of Prof. Ademola Tayo.
