Nigeria Collaborates with Australian University to Boost Mining Sector Capacity

In a significant move to strengthen Nigeria’s mining sector, the Federal Government has entered into a strategic partnership with an Australian university to provide advanced training for local mining professionals.

The collaboration, announced on Monday, aims to address the country’s skills gap in the extractive industry and promote sustainable mining practices. Under the agreement, Nigerian engineers, geologists, and other sector specialists will undergo capacity-building programs led by experts from the partnering Australian institution, widely recognized for its expertise in mining and mineral sciences.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, stated that the initiative is part of broader efforts to diversify the economy and reposition mining as a key contributor to national growth.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to developing a skilled workforce that can attract investment, ensure environmental safety, and increase the sector’s contribution to GDP,” Dr. Alake said.

The training modules will focus on modern mining technologies, regulatory compliance, environmental management, and operational efficiency, with both in-person and remote learning options.

The Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Leann Johnston, expressed optimism about the collaboration, highlighting the mutual benefits of knowledge transfer and innovation between both countries.

With Nigeria sitting on vast untapped mineral resources, stakeholders say this educational partnership could mark a turning point in unlocking the sector’s full potential.
