UNN Welcomes 10,000 New Students, VC Urges Discipline and Academic Focus

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has formally welcomed over 10,000 newly admitted students into its academic community during its 2024/2025 matriculation ceremony held on Friday. The event, marked by academic fanfare and celebration, also carried a stern message from the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles Igwe, who cautioned freshers against engaging in anti-social behavior.

In his address, Professor Igwe congratulated the students on their admission into one of Nigeria’s premier institutions and urged them to take full advantage of the academic and moral training offered by the university.

“This is a moment of joy for you and your families, but it also marks the beginning of a serious journey,” he said. “You are now ambassadors of this institution. Any involvement in cultism, examination malpractice, or any form of anti-social behavior will not be tolerated.”

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the university’s zero-tolerance policy on misconduct, reminding students that character is as important as academic excellence. He also encouraged them to uphold the core values of integrity, discipline, and respect for university rules.

The matriculation ceremony, which took place simultaneously at the Nsukka and Enugu campuses, featured the administration of the matriculation oath by the Registrar, formally inducting the students into the academic family of UNN.

Some of the newly admitted students expressed their excitement and hope for the journey ahead. “It’s a dream come true to be here,” said Chidera Nwankwo, a new student in the Faculty of Engineering. “I’m ready to make the most of this opportunity and make my parents proud.”

Parents, guardians, and academic staff in attendance praised the university for maintaining its tradition of academic excellence and discipline.

UNN, established in 1960, continues to rank among the top universities in Nigeria and is known for producing distinguished graduates across various fields. The 2024 matriculation not only symbolizes the university’s commitment to education but also its effort to instill values that prepare students for leadership roles in society.

As the new academic session begins, the university’s leadership reaffirmed its dedication to providing a conducive learning environment while ensuring that students remain focused, law-abiding, and committed to their studies.
