UNN Reiterates Commitment to Meritocracy as New Students Matriculates

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to merit as the cornerstone of its admission process. Speaking at the 51st matriculation ceremony held on the university’s main campus, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles Igwe, charged newly admitted students to uphold academic excellence and integrity throughout their stay at the institution.

Addressing thousands of freshers and their families, Prof. Igwe emphasized that gaining admission into the prestigious university was based strictly on merit, in line with UNN’s long-standing tradition of academic excellence and fair play.

“We have continued to place a very high premium on merit. Let it be on record that no one gains admission into this university except through a transparent, merit-based process,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

He urged the students to remain focused and disciplined, warning against any involvement in social vices or activities that could derail their academic journey. “Your admission into UNN is not just a reward for past effort, but a call to greater responsibility,” he said.

The ceremony marked a major milestone for over 10,000 students admitted across various faculties for the 2024/2025 academic session. Dressed in academic gowns, the students took their matriculation oath, pledging allegiance to the rules and values of the university.

In his closing remarks, Professor Igwe assured parents and guardians of the institution’s commitment to providing a safe and enabling environment for learning, research, and personal development.
