A student of MetroKebbi University who was abducted by gunmen has been successfully rescued by security operatives in a coordinated operation, authorities confirmed late Wednesday.
The victim, whose identity has been withheld for security reasons, was reportedly kidnapped earlier this week near the university’s off-campus housing area in Kebbi State. According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen stormed the area in the dead of night, firing sporadically before fleeing with the student.
The swift intervention of security agencies—including local police, military personnel, and vigilante groups—was key to the student’s rescue. A high-ranking security source said the operation involved intelligence gathering and tracking of the assailants, leading to a successful ambush at a remote hideout.
“We acted on actionable intelligence and were able to locate the perpetrators before they could relocate the victim,” the source stated. “The student is safe and undergoing medical evaluation. No ransom was paid.”
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the rescue in a statement, praising the synergy among security forces and local communities. “We commend the bravery of our operatives and the support of vigilant residents who provided critical information,” said DSP Nafiu Abubakar, spokesperson for the command.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of students and the growing threat of insecurity in Nigeria’s northwestern region, where kidnappings for ransom have become alarmingly frequent.
The management of MetroKebbi University expressed relief over the student’s safe return and assured parents and students that enhanced security measures were being implemented both on and off campus.
“We will continue to work with security agencies to ensure the safety of our students and staff. No one should have to live in fear while pursuing their education,” a university spokesperson said.
This rescue marks a rare victory in the ongoing battle against abductions in northern Nigeria and highlights the urgent need for sustained action to protect educational institutions from criminal elements.
