Doctors in Akwa Ibom State have issued a 21-day strike notice, citing unresolved welfare concerns as the primary reason for their impending industrial action. The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in the state has raised alarms over poor working conditions, unpaid salaries, and a lack of essential medical equipment, which they claim are compromising healthcare delivery.
Dr. Etim Ekanem, the NMA chairman, conveyed the association’s frustration, calling the current state of affairs unsustainable. “Our members are demoralized and overworked, and the lack of adequate compensation is exacerbating the situation,” he stated in a press conference.
The strike, which will begin if demands are not met within three weeks, could significantly impact public health services in the state. The NMA is urging the Akwa Ibom State Government to engage in urgent negotiations to address the issues and avoid a disruption in healthcare provision.
