Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State, has officially resumed academic activities following a temporary shutdown prompted by student protests earlier this month. The university’s administration had closed the institution after students took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction over various issues, including poor infrastructure and administrative delays.
The protest, which saw students demanding improvements in campus facilities, timely academic schedules, and enhanced welfare provisions, lasted for several days and disrupted normal university operations.
In a statement released by the university’s management, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, assured students and staff that the administration is committed to addressing the concerns raised by the protesters. He emphasized that the reopening of the university marks a step towards restoring calm and ensuring the uninterrupted continuation of academic programs.
“The university remains dedicated to ensuring the welfare of its students and faculty. We have begun consultations with relevant stakeholders to resolve the grievances, and we urge students to return to campus for their studies,” Prof. Akinwumi stated.
The protest initially led to the closure of lecture halls, hostels, and administrative offices. Now that the university has resumed operations, students are expected to return to their academic routines, with lectures resuming immediately.
The management has also promised to set up a dialogue forum where student representatives will engage directly with the administration to find sustainable solutions to the concerns raised during the protest.
