In a move aimed at addressing the ongoing energy crisis and ensuring uninterrupted power supply to key public institutions, the Oyo State government has announced plans to connect the University College Hospital (UCH) to the state power grid. This initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to reduce the hospital’s reliance on erratic national power supply, which has been a significant challenge for healthcare delivery in the region.
Governor Seyi Makinde, during a press briefing on Thursday, revealed that the state government has secured funding and is in the final stages of implementing the project. He emphasized the importance of a stable power supply, particularly for critical sectors such as healthcare, where reliable energy is essential for operations ranging from emergency services to patient care.
“The energy crisis has affected every aspect of our lives, and healthcare institutions like UCH cannot afford to be at the mercy of the national grid’s instability,” Governor Makinde said. “Connecting UCH to the state power grid will not only improve its service delivery but also ensure that critical health services are not interrupted.”
UCH, one of the oldest and largest teaching hospitals in Nigeria, has faced recurrent power outages due to the poor state of the national grid, often relying on expensive diesel generators. This project, which is expected to be completed in phases, is seen as a significant step towards strengthening the hospital’s infrastructure and capacity to handle medical emergencies without disruption.
The initiative is also expected to reduce the hospital’s operational costs by cutting down on the expenses related to generator fuel and maintenance. This aligns with the Oyo State government’s broader agenda to provide sustainable energy solutions to key public services, including schools, government offices, and health institutions, amidst the country’s ongoing energy crisis.
Energy experts have lauded the state’s decision, noting that such proactive measures could serve as a model for other regions grappling with similar challenges. As the state looks to diversify its energy sources, it is hoped that this move will help mitigate the impact of Nigeria’s power supply issues on its most critical public services.
The Oyo State government is also exploring partnerships with private energy firms to enhance the state’s energy capacity, with the goal of achieving more robust and reliable electricity distribution for all sectors.
