University of Nigeria Revolutionizes Alumni Participation with Online Voting System

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has successfully conducted its first-ever online election for a representative to the university’s governing council, marking a significant step towards enhancing alumni participation in the institution’s governance. This move, spearheaded by Acting Vice-Chancellor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu, aims to promote greater engagement among former students worldwide.

The online voting system, developed in collaboration with the university’s Embedded IT Consulting partner, D2TP-Direct 2 The Point, enables alumni to cast their votes from any location, eliminating the need for physical presence. This innovation has not only increased voter turnout but has also streamlined the election process, making it more efficient and accessible for graduates around the globe.

Iheme Nwabueze, a representative of D2TP, emphasized that the online election system aligns with global trends in e-voting, ensuring electoral integrity and transparency. He added that the election of a Convocation Representative to the governing council is crucial for ensuring alumni voices are heard in decision-making processes related to policy, finances, and university property management.

“This election is a testament to the university’s commitment to modernizing its democratic processes and embracing digital solutions,” Nwabueze said. “The system’s transparency and real-time results have instilled confidence among alumni, making them feel more connected and involved in shaping the institution’s future.”

The successful implementation of this online voting system highlights the university’s vision for inclusive governance. It is expected to strengthen alumni relations and encourage active participation in university affairs. The election process, which lasted 24 hours to accommodate alumni in different time zones, culminated in the election of Chukwuemeka Udoh as the new Convocation Representative to the Governing Council.

The UNN Governing Council is responsible for formulating policies that guide the university’s administration. The council’s composition includes both internal and external members, including the Pro-Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education.

This pioneering effort positions the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as a leader in embracing technological advancements in academic governance, setting an example for other institutions seeking to enhance their electoral processes and engage their global communities more effectively.
