President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) to Yakubu Gowon University in honor of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.
The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement to State House correspondents on Monday following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa. Idris explained that the renaming recognizes Gowon’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s unity and progress during his leadership.
Idris also revealed that the proposal to rename the university will be sent to the National Assembly for formal approval. He highlighted that this decision reflects the government’s appreciation for General Gowon’s remarkable leadership, especially during a critical period in Nigeria’s history.
The renaming is part of President Tinubu’s broader initiative to honor prominent figures whose legacies have shaped Nigeria’s history and development.
