UNN to Generate Its Own Power Amid Ongoing Energy Crisis

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), is set to address its ongoing power challenges by generating its own electricity. Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Polycarp Chigbu, announced this initiative during a press briefing on Tuesday, coinciding with the institution’s 53rd convocation ceremony.

Chigbu lamented the severe energy issues that have plagued the university, particularly the rising electricity costs imposed by the Main Power Electricity Distribution Company and the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). He explained that the university had been disconnected from the national grid for over two months due to these challenges.

“The electricity challenge has significantly impacted our operations, and we have been disconnected from the national grid for over two months,” he said.

In response to the situation, UNN has inaugurated the Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Power and Energy Development. Funded by the World Bank and the Agence Française de Développement, the center aims to foster the development of quality human capital to advance sustainable energy solutions throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.

Chigbu expressed optimism that the expertise from the new center would help resolve the university’s power issues while contributing to regional energy security and sustainability.

This move follows broader efforts across Nigeria, such as Kogi State’s recent approval to manage its own electricity generation and distribution, aimed at improving power supply and attracting investment to the region.
