Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Niger Delta University (NDU) to call off its ongoing strike, which began on December 10. The governor made this appeal on Wednesday during the 148th meeting of the state executive council at the Government House in Yenagoa, upon his return from annual leave.
Governor Diri stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving the issues between the university lecturers and the government, emphasizing that strikes should be a last resort. He assured ASUU that his administration values the contributions of lecturers and is committed to addressing their concerns.
“I invite ASUU to return to the negotiation table. The issues can be amicably resolved. Government is ready to prioritize the welfare of our lecturers and workers,” Diri said, calling for a focus on the future of students and the younger generation.
In addition to his appeal to ASUU, Governor Diri addressed concerns regarding the state’s ban on open grazing, warning that cattle herders who violate the law will face consequences. The governor reiterated that the anti-open grazing law remains in force and directed relevant government officials to ensure its enforcement.
“I want to make it clear that open grazing is still banned in Bayelsa. We cannot allow our farmlands to be destroyed by herders,” he stated. Diri also called on community leaders to work with state authorities to enforce the law, emphasizing that Bayelsa is open for business but that all residents must adhere to the state’s laws.
The governor further cautioned against bush burning, urging residents to adopt environmentally friendly farming practices. “Bush burning is not an option. Let us explore better ways to farm without harming our people or the environment,” he said.
Governor Diri concluded by expressing his gratitude to the people of Bayelsa for their continued support during his leave, encouraging them to remain engaged in the development of the state. He also highlighted recent accolades received by his administration, including awards for Governor of the Year on Marine and Blue Economy and Best Security Conscious Governor. Additionally, the governor presented a N30 million reward to the Bayelsa State team, which emerged champions at the recent National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST).
