MDCN Inducts 74 New Doctors from Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto

Sokoto, Nigeria – December 17, 2024 – The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) inducted 74 new graduates in Medicine and Surgery from Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in their medical careers. The induction ceremony, led by MDCN Registrar, Dr. Fatima Kyari, included an oath-taking session where the graduates were urged to view their new roles as a service to humanity.

In her address, Dr. Kyari stressed the importance of adhering to the professional and ethical guidelines that every doctor in Nigeria must follow. She reminded the new doctors that their roles come with a sense of privilege and responsibility, with thousands across the country yearning for the opportunity to serve in the medical field.

“The journey in medical practice begins immediately,” Kyari said, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and professionalism within the medical community. “Medical practice is procedural and hierarchical, and the profession is patient-centered. I am confident that your tutors have fully prepared you for the challenges ahead.”

Dr. Kyari also highlighted MDCN’s commitment to expanding the intake of medical students and aligning healthcare services with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Vice-Chancellor of UDUS, Prof. Bashir Garba, also addressed the graduates, reminding them of their responsibility to care for the sick and vulnerable. He emphasized that the medical profession demands deep compassion, lifelong learning, and unwavering dedication.

“This noble profession demands not only deep compassion but also an unwavering commitment to life-long learning and dedication,” said Prof. Garba. “As future leaders of healthcare, you bear the weighty responsibility of caring for the sick and vulnerable.”

Prof. Garba commended the university’s School of Health Sciences for its dedication and investment in research and scholarships, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the challenges of the medical profession.

In his remarks, Prof. Riskuwa Shehu, the Chairman of the occasion and former Vice-Chancellor of UDUS, urged the new doctors to uphold the ethical standards of the profession. He also called on parents to continue supporting their children’s medical careers. He noted that the healthcare landscape is constantly evolving, presenting challenges that require innovative solutions and high standards.

The event marked the official entry of the 74 graduates into the medical profession, with their responsibilities now extending beyond the classroom to caring for the health and well-being of Nigerians.
