University of Ilorin Hosts Third Summit of D8 Network of Pioneers for Research and Innovation

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) hosted the third summit of the D8 Network of Pioneers for Research and Innovation (D8NPRI) on Monday, bringing together 28 universities from eight different countries. The summit aims to strengthen collaboration and promote multi-disciplinary research that benefits member institutions, their communities, and students.

The D8 member countries represented at the summit are Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Turkey, and Malaysia.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILORIN, Professor Wahab Egbewole SAN, highlighted the importance of networking and collaboration for the development of the member universities. Speaking on the theme, “Networking and Collaborating for Development,” Professor Egbewole emphasized that the summit provides a platform for enhancing academic collaboration, fostering joint research initiatives, and improving curriculum development. He expressed optimism that the discussions would lead to fruitful partnerships, particularly in the areas of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, gene editing, and quantum computing, which are shaping global progress.

“As the most sought-after university in Nigeria and with the highest number of foreign students in the country, the University of Ilorin is proud to join the D8 Network of Pioneers for Research and Innovation,” said Professor Egbewole. “This collaboration will have a lasting impact on the future of our institutions.”

The summit also focuses on facilitating exchanges between students and lecturers, promoting joint research, and exploring potential youth employment opportunities for university graduates. The discussions at the summit are expected to culminate in the adoption of the “Ilorin Charter,” which will outline the operational framework for the D8 Network of Pioneers and guide future engagements within the network.

This summit marks a significant step in enhancing international academic partnerships and fostering development through collaborative research and innovation.
