The authorities of Thomas Adewumi University (TAU), a newly licensed private institution located in Oko-Irese, Kwara State, have announced the engagement of approximately 500 armed security personnel to safeguard the campus and ensure a conducive learning environment for its students. The university’s decision to increase security measures comes in response to reports of rising insecurity in parts of the Kwara South senatorial district, where the university is situated, as well as other areas across Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the university’s first convocation ceremonies, Prof. Francisca Oladipo, Vice Chancellor of TAU, emphasized that the security personnel, including soldiers, members of the civil defense corps, vigilante groups, and local hunters, will be responsible for securing the 300-hectare university campus. She explained that this initiative is part of the university’s broader strategy to create a safe and focused academic environment for its students.
“We have engaged 500 security personnel to man the perimeter fencing and secure the campus. This is a part of our efforts to assure parents and guardians that their children are in safe hands while pursuing their education,” Prof. Oladipo said. She further added that the university aims to provide adequate security to ensure that students can focus on their academic pursuits without fear of disruption.
The university, which was officially licensed by the federal government on April 8, 2021, and commenced academic activities on May 16, 2021, will celebrate the achievements of its pioneer students at the first convocation ceremony on November 26, 2024. During this event, six out of the 26 graduating students will be honored with First Class Honors. Other graduates will receive Second Class Honors (Upper and Lower Division), and one student will graduate with a Third Class.
The university’s maiden convocation will also feature a lecture by the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, titled The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Future of Work: Implications for Nigerian Graduates. Prof. Oladipo expressed pride in the accomplishments of the graduates, noting that the institution’s training is designed to equip students to contribute meaningfully to the Nigerian and global workforce.
TAU offers academic programs across three faculties, including Computing and Applied Sciences, and Management and Social Sciences. The university’s commitment to academic excellence and safety reflects its dedication to shaping the next generation of leaders and innovators.
