The Federal Government has announced the reinstatement of Professor Joseph Ikechebelu as the acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, following the removal of Professor Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh.
In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the decision was made after the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who nullified the appointment of Professor Odoh as the substantive Vice-Chancellor. Odoh’s appointment was deemed illegal, having been made by the dissolved 10th Governing Council of the university.
“Sequel to the approval of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, vide letter Ref: PRES/84/EDU/10 dated 18th November, 2024, I am pleased to convey the approval of the Honourable Minister to reinstate you as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university with immediate effect,” the letter stated. Sani-Gwarzo also directed Professor Ikechebelu to take charge of the administration of the university and handle any matters requiring council approval until a new governing council is constituted.
In addition, the government has reappointed Victor Modebelu as the Acting Registrar of UNIZIK, following the dismissal of the former registrar, Rosemary Nwokike, by President Tinubu. Modebelu had previously held the position and will continue in this role until further notice.
