The Sheba Centre in Lagos was the venue for Avi-Day 2024, a landmark conference organized by the Maman Avia Initiative, focused on youth involvement in the future of aviation. With the theme “Wings Unclipped: Is There Hope for the Next Generation?”, the event attracted leaders from the aviation industry, aspiring young professionals, and a diverse audience dedicated to fostering societal progress.

Ololade Adenekan, convener of the event, opened the conference by highlighting the importance of youth in shaping the future. “Youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the driving force today,” she stated, setting the tone for a day of engaging discussions.

In his keynote speech, Chukwuerika Achums, CEO of Viva Jets, emphasized the need for innovative thinking and mentorship in aviation. Reflecting on his own career, Achums encouraged young people to embrace challenges and remain resilient in their pursuits.

The conference also featured a panel discussion with industry leaders who explored the challenges young people face in entering the aviation sector. Key topics included education, skill development, and the importance of mentorship. Panelists agreed that a concerted focus on youth development and partnerships for internships and job placements is essential for the industry’s future.

Interactive exhibitions showcased the latest aviation technologies and career opportunities, while the 4th Miss Aviation Nigeria competition highlighted young women excelling in the sector. The event also promoted the Avia Membership 360 program, which offers free mentorship, training, and networking to young people in aviation.

Sponsors, including NBJ VIP Ground Handling, ETAM AVITAT Services, and VivaJets, played a key role in the event, contributing expertise and resources to support youth development. Adenekan called for greater corporate involvement, urging organizations to create pathways for young people in the aviation industry.

The event concluded with a call to action for both young people and industry leaders to collaborate in empowering the next generation. Adenekan encouraged attendees to take ownership of their dreams while emphasizing the responsibility of stakeholders to provide the necessary tools and opportunities.
