The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi, has unveiled key initiatives as part of the institution’s 50th-anniversary celebrations, themed “UNICAL @50.”
Speaking at a press briefing in the university’s council chambers, Prof. Obi highlighted the development of sports and recreational facilities as one of the landmark achievements tied to the celebrations. She also announced that the university would host the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) games after a 33-year hiatus, further boosting its sports profile.
The Vice Chancellor outlined additional projects aimed at enhancing the university’s infrastructure and academic excellence. These include the foundation work for a standard Senate building befitting a 50-year-old institution and the construction of a dedicated convocation arena for academic ceremonies.
Reflecting on UNICAL’s growth since its establishment in 1975 as one of Nigeria’s seven second-generation universities, Prof. Obi noted the institution’s remarkable expansion from a student population of 406 to over 40,000. The staff population has also grown to more than 80,000.
The anniversary celebrations will honor distinguished alumni, academic and non-teaching staff, and principal officers who have significantly contributed to the university’s development over the years.
UNICAL’s 50th anniversary not only celebrates its legacy but also sets the stage for continued growth and excellence in education, sports, and infrastructure.
