University of Ibadan Partners with Oyo Police to Enhance Security, VC Appeals for Support

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, has announced a collaboration with the Oyo State Police Command to address security concerns on the university campuses. Speaking at the university’s 76th Foundation Day celebration on Monday, Adebowale emphasized that security challenges had become a growing concern over the past decade.

The event, which saw 485 graduands awarded Doctor of Philosophy degrees, was attended by prominent figures including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad; Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Barrister Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Lawal; Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State; and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, represented by Otun Olubadan Oba (Senator) Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja.

Professor Adebowale highlighted the significant progress made in improving campus security through the partnership with the Oyo State Police Command. He stated that security breaches had been substantially reduced, creating a safer environment for students and staff. “As a result of these efforts, security breaches have significantly decreased, and a sense of safety now pervades our campuses,” he said.

In addition to security, the Vice Chancellor raised concerns about the university’s power supply. Adebowale noted that the university’s electricity bill had more than doubled in recent months, straining its resources. He appealed to President Tinubu for special attention to be given to the university, particularly in the form of dedicated funds for infrastructure renovation and power supply improvements.

He also touched on challenges such as aging buildings, poor internet connectivity, and the growing need for expansion as the university continues to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s educational landscape. Adebowale called for increased funding and resources to help the university maintain its status as Nigeria’s intellectual capital.

“The University of Ibadan should be given special status with sufficient support and resources to transform it into a world destination for academic and intellectual pilgrimage,” he urged.

The university’s leadership remains committed to addressing these challenges while continuing to contribute to Nigeria’s development as a leading academic institution.
