The University of Ilorin Zoological Garden has received a remarkable donation of a 25-year-old crocodile, valued at millions of naira, from philanthropist and traditional leader, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku. The donation, announced in the University’s Bulletin on Monday, highlights Atiku’s long-standing commitment to community development and cultural preservation.

Atiku, who holds the title of Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, explained that the rearing of crocodiles holds significant cultural and symbolic value in his community. He emphasized that the crocodile donation reflects the strong relationship between the University and its host community, as well as his family’s tradition of crocodile rearing.

The crocodile, estimated to be around 25 years old, is expected to be a valuable addition to the University’s growing animal collection. Atiku’s gesture underscores his dedication to preserving local heritage and promoting the zoo as a center for education and tourism.

In receiving the donation, Oyeyemi Jekayinfa, Chairperson of the Unilorin Zoological Garden Board, expressed gratitude for Atiku’s contribution. She commended the ongoing collaboration between the University and the local community, which has led to several positive outcomes. Jekayinfa also invited the public to visit the zoo for educational and recreational purposes.

Olatunji Yusuf, General Manager of the Unilorin Zoo, praised the donation as a significant milestone in the zoo’s development. He highlighted the zoo’s distinctive features, including its natural environment, suspended bridge, and skilled staff, adding that the donation would enhance the zoo’s appeal as both a cultural and educational destination for the Ilorin community.
