The management of Kwara State University (KWASU) has issued a statement denying that the victim of a police killing in Ilorin, Suleiman Olayinka, was a student of the institution. This comes in response to media reports suggesting that Olayinka, a 27-year-old man who was killed in Tanke community, was enrolled at KWASU.
The Kwara State Police Command had arrested three officers in connection with Olayinka’s death. According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the police were investigating a complaint of cheating and criminal breach of trust involving Olayinka, which led to an inquiry and subsequent action by the officers.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, KWASU’s Acting Director of University Relations, Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, clarified that Olayinka had voluntarily withdrawn from the university in the 2018/2019 academic session while in his second year in the Department of Statistics. Dr. Aliyu stressed that records from the university show Olayinka had not been a registered student at KWASU for several years.
“The management of Kwara State University strongly sympathizes with the family of the deceased and prays that God grants them the fortitude to bear the loss,” the statement read.
The university’s response aims to address the confusion surrounding Olayinka’s status as a student, following the tragic events involving the police officers. The ongoing investigation by the police will determine the circumstances surrounding the killing.
