The Delta State House of Assembly has passed the University of Science and Technology, Ozoro Amendment Bill, 2021, which, if signed into law, will change the name of the institution to Southern Delta University, Ozoro.
The bill, which was transmitted to the Assembly by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Tuesday, sailed through all three readings during Wednesday’s plenary session in Asaba. The proposed name change aims to reflect the institution’s expanded vision as it seeks to diversify and offer a wider range of academic programs.
Following the motion by Majority Leader Emeka Nwaobi to suspend certain procedural rules, the Assembly quickly adopted the third reading and approved the bill. The motion was seconded by Charles Emetulu, a member representing Ndokwa West.
In his remarks, Speaker Dennis Guwor lauded the lawmakers for their prompt action, calling the passage of the bill a “significant step forward” for higher education in Delta State. He added that the governing council of the university had requested the name change to facilitate the establishment of additional faculties and broaden the university’s offerings, positioning it as a full-fledged conventional university.
The bill is now set to be presented to Governor Oborevwori for his assent, after which the name change will be official.
