Experts Urge University-Energy Sector Collaboration to Address Nigeria’s Electricity Crisis

Experts have called for greater collaboration between Nigerian universities, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and energy providers to tackle the ongoing electricity crisis impacting the education sector. The call was made during the Education Writer’s Association of Nigeria (EWAN) Annual Summit held on October 23, 2024, at the University of Lagos, under the theme “High Tariffs: Resolving Electricity Crisis in Nigeria’s Education Institutions.”

Panelists discussed the severe challenges faced by universities due to rising electricity tariffs, erratic power supply, and the elimination of government subsidies. They highlighted how these issues are disrupting daily operations, increasing costs, and negatively affecting teaching and learning. Universities are struggling to cope with high energy bills, and many cannot invest in alternative energy solutions due to financial constraints.

Key recommendations included:

  • Investment in Renewable Energy: Universities should prioritize solar power to reduce dependence on the unreliable national grid.
  • Policy Support: The government and NERC should implement lower energy tariffs for educational institutions.
  • Public-Private Partnerships: Collaborative efforts between universities, energy providers, and government agencies are needed to create cost-effective energy solutions.
  • Energy Conservation: Awareness campaigns to promote efficient energy use in universities.

EWAN Chairman, Mr. Mojeed Alabi, emphasized, “Quality education cannot exist without stable electricity,” underscoring the urgent need for action to secure affordable and reliable power for educational institutions in Nigeria.
