University of Uyo Graduates 12,450 Students, Including 174 First-Class Honours

The University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State is set to graduate a total of 12,450 students at its 2024 convocation on Saturday. The institution also celebrated a significant achievement, with 174 students earning first-class honours.

During a pre-convocation briefing held on Tuesday, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nyaudo Ndaeyo provided a breakdown of the graduands, highlighting the institution’s growth and accomplishments. This year’s convocation is a combined ceremony for the 29th and 30th convocations.

The breakdown of the graduands is as follows:

  • PhD: 303
  • Master’s Degrees: 608
  • Postgraduate Diplomas: 246
  • Undergraduate (2020/2021 Session): 4,823, with 56 first-class graduates
  • Undergraduate (2021/2022 Session): 6,012, with 118 first-class graduates
  • Diplomas: 411
  • Certificates: 37

The Vice Chancellor also announced that three eminent Nigerians will be conferred with honorary degrees, including Chief Effiong Afiakure, Mrs. Halima Zakaria, and Dr. Itanwan James. Additionally, Prof. Akpan Ekpo will be awarded an Honorary Professor Emeritus degree, while Professors Enefiok Essien SAN, Godfrey Udoh, and Essien Urua will receive Honorary Distinguished Professorships.

While celebrating the university’s achievements, Prof. Ndaeyo also addressed challenges faced by the institution, including equipment theft, funding issues, land encroachment, and the shortage of staff due to the federal government’s employment freeze.
