Professor Foluke Sola-Ojo to Deliver Inaugural Lecture on Genetic Diversity in LivestockBy Our Correspondent

Ilorin, Nigeria – Professor Foluke Sola-Ojo, a registered animal scientist from the Department of Animal Production at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development. She believes the new ministry will play a crucial role in enhancing Nigeria’s livestock policies, particularly in the areas of animal breeding and genetic resource management.

Professor Sola-Ojo, who is slated to deliver the 268th inaugural lecture at UNILORIN this week, titled “Beast and Beauty in Genetic Diversity”, emphasized the importance of the new ministry in creating a robust framework for preserving livestock germplasm and maintaining a comprehensive data bank. According to her, these efforts are vital for addressing challenges such as low production levels, restricted genetic diversity, and the use of unsustainable breeding techniques.

In her comments, Sola-Ojo noted, “The establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development is highly commendable. It will help Nigeria implement policies that foster sustainable breeding and conservation practices, which are essential for enhancing productivity, safeguarding genetic resources, and supporting the long-term development of our livestock sector.”

She further explained that a focus on preserving the nation’s livestock is critical for ensuring continuous production of animal protein, a key component of Nigeria’s food security strategy. She advocated for full cooperation between the government, farmers, and local communities to achieve the country’s livestock production goals.

During her lecture, Professor Sola-Ojo will explore the intricate relationship between genetic diversity in livestock and the broader implications for sustainable agricultural practices. She is expected to highlight how improved animal breeding methods can boost livestock productivity, enhance food security, and contribute to economic development.

The lecture is set to offer a comprehensive analysis of the state of Nigeria’s livestock sector, emphasizing the need for policies and practices that balance the preservation of genetic resources with the demands of modern farming.
