Ibadan, November 3, 2024 — In a remarkable display of generosity and commitment to their alma mater, former students of the Mass Communication department at The Polytechnic Ibadan have donated a state-of-the-art 3.15KWP solar power system to the institution. This significant contribution marks the culmination of their 20th anniversary celebrations, reflecting a deep bond and dedication to the school they once attended.
The donation ceremony took place on Saturday at the Rotary House in Iyaganku, where members of the Association of Student Communicators, Class of 2003/04, gathered to commemorate two decades since their graduation. The initiative stems from the persistent issue of inadequate electricity supply that the cohort faced during their studies, prompting them to take action to support current students.
Rotimi Wusu, president of the alumni group, emphasized the importance of harnessing available opportunities and urged students to leverage social media as a platform for advocacy and change. “Transform the narrative, create meaningful changes in the polytechnic and within the department, strive for excellence, and let your light shine beyond these walls,” he encouraged.
Wasiu Olatunbosun, the Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, praised the alumni for their commitment, labeling them as a “set of achievers.” Olatunbosun, who once lectured in the same department, highlighted the critical role of supporting educational institutions and fostering a culture of giving back.
Taiwo Lasisi, the acting rector of the polytechnic, expressed his gratitude, stating that the solar system not only addresses the power supply challenge but also sets a precedent for future alumni engagement. “This gift is given to the management, not just to the Mass Communication Department. We hope that other sets from other departments can also engage with this initiative,” he remarked.
As the sun sets over Ibadan, the bright future of The Polytechnic Ibadan shines a little brighter, thanks to the commitment of its alumni, proving that education is not just about learning within the classroom but also about creating lasting impacts for generations to come.
