AWKA: The Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Tanko Summunu, has urged the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka to prioritize peace and collaboration within the institution. His appeal came during a meeting with members of the Governing Council, led by Pro Chancellor Ambassador Greg O. Mbadiwe.
The Minister emphasized the importance of unity between the Governing Council, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) to foster stability and progress at the university. He stated that a peaceful environment is crucial for the university’s rapid development.
This call for harmony comes in the wake of tensions between the Governing Council and MDCAN regarding eligibility criteria for the Vice Chancellor position. Ambassador Mbadiwe assured the Minister that the Council is committed to maintaining peace and resolving all grievances amicably, highlighting the importance of collaboration for the benefit of the university named after Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, a revered figure in Nigerian history.
The meeting concluded positively, with discussions also addressing staff welfare and broader challenges facing higher education in Nigeria, as reported by Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Special Adviser to the acting Vice Chancellor on Information and Public Relations.
