Lagos State, Nigeria — Femi Otedola, Chancellor of Augustine University in Ilara, Epe, has pledged a substantial N3.7 billion donation for the second phase of the university’s engineering faculty building. This announcement was made during the institution’s sixth convocation ceremony, where Otedola was represented by Philip Akinola.
Otedola, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, highlighted the university’s aim to become a center of excellence in engineering education. This latest donation follows his previous contributions, which included a N2 billion completion of the engineering faculty’s Block ‘A’ and N140 million for furnishings. Additionally, he donated N110 million for streetlights and a standby generator, and in a notable gesture, he covered tuition fees for all returning and new students with a donation of N750 million at the university’s fifth convocation.
Reflecting on the institution’s growth, Otedola stated, “Before I conclude my speech, I wish to note the positive growth of the student population. It is my dream that Augustine University is known as the center of excellence for engineering studies.” He revealed that the contract for the second phase of the engineering building is nearing completion and that the project is expected to be finalized within 12 months.
Emphasizing the university’s commitment to holistic education, Otedola remarked, “Learning without character is incomplete. The world does not only need skilled individuals but also those who are ethical and committed to the common good.” He encouraged graduates to utilize their education as a platform for community service and to embody values of humility, integrity, and compassion.
Bishop Adewale Martins, the Catholic Bishop of Lagos Archdiocese, echoed Otedola’s sentiments on the importance of moral and spiritual development in education. Professor Christopher Odetunde, the university’s vice chancellor, also expressed gratitude to Otedola and other contributors for their ongoing support in enhancing the institution’s mission.
As the graduates prepare to enter a challenging world, Otedola reminded them of the importance of using their skills and education for the greater good, asserting that character and leadership are crucial in today’s rapidly changing environment.
