NOUN VC Warns Against Misuse of Digital Information at Global Media Literacy Workshop

Abuja, Nigeria — Professor Olufemi Peters, Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has issued a caution regarding the irresponsible dissemination of information through digital platforms. His remarks were made during a workshop held to commemorate Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024.

The workshop, themed “New Digital Frontier of Information, Media and Information Literacy for Public Interest Information,” focused on the challenges and responsibilities associated with digital communication. Peters emphasized the ease with which information spreads in today’s digital age and the need for individuals to be mindful of the content they share.

“We are talking to human beings, so we should be mindful of how we use information,” he stated, highlighting the societal impact of shared information. He noted the potential for content creators to earn significant income but stressed the importance of ethical content generation and dissemination.

Peters encouraged attendees to appreciate the nuances of content creation and the importance of responsible media literacy, emphasizing that technology is an integral part of modern life. He urged Nigerians to embrace digital advancements while remaining vigilant about the information they consume and share.

Dr. Jacob Suemo from Nile University of Nigeria added that the strength of digital platforms necessitates rigorous verification of information before it is disseminated. He warned against both disinformation, which is intentionally misleading, and misinformation, which can harm despite being based on truth.

The workshop underscored the profound influence of technology on communication and community empowerment, urging participants to navigate social media responsibly.
