Rivers State Awards 100 Scholarships as Wigwe University Officially Opens

Isiokpo, Rivers State — Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has awarded scholarships to 100 students at the newly established Wigwe University in Isiokpo, marking a significant step for the institution just eight months after the tragic passing of its founder, Dr. Herbert Wigwe.

Dr. Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Holdings Limited, and his family tragically died in a helicopter crash on February 9, 2024. Following their burial in a private tomb at the university, there were concerns regarding the institution’s future. However, the official opening of Wigwe University on October 18 reassured supporters of its vision.

At the ceremony, Governor Fubara emphasized the government’s commitment to realizing the late philanthropist’s dream for the university. Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ovy Chukwuma, Fubara expressed confidence in the university’s curriculum and its potential to positively impact both the state and beyond.

“What we are seeing here will change the dynamics of undergraduate and postgraduate education in this clime,” Fubara said, honoring Dr. Wigwe’s legacy. He announced that the scholarship distribution would favor Rivers State indigenes, with 70 of the awards designated for locals and 30 for non-indigenes residing in the state.

The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi, reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to Dr. Wigwe’s founding principles, focusing on nurturing leadership and promoting Africa’s prosperity. He stated, “Wigwe University is set to become a leading university in Africa, uniting potential and fostering fearless leaders.”

With this scholarship initiative, the Rivers State government aims to uphold Dr. Wigwe’s vision and support educational advancement in the region.
