Awka, Nigeria – The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), South-East Caucus, has declared a five-day solidarity and warning strike, effective October 24, 2024. This action is in response to concerns surrounding the selection criteria for the Vice-Chancellor position at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), which allegedly excludes clinical lecturers.
In a letter dated October 16, 2024, signed by Dr. Iroro E. Yarhere and Dr. Stanley Ogbonna, the association criticized the eligibility requirements for the Vice-Chancellor role. Notably, the criteria stipulate that candidates must hold a PhD and have supervised PhD students, effectively disqualifying clinical lecturers who hold Fellowships from recognized medical colleges.
The letter highlights additional concerns, including a requirement for candidates to have secured research grants of at least 400 million Naira, which the association argues overlooks the diverse nature of research across various disciplines.
MDCAN officials emphasized that the exclusionary criteria set a dangerous precedent, warning that if allowed, other universities may adopt similar policies, undermining the professional status of clinical lecturers who significantly contribute to academic and healthcare missions.
If the situation is not addressed, MDCAN has indicated that they may escalate their industrial action beyond the initial five days. The association is urging the Committees of Vice Chancellors and Pro Chancellors to intervene and ensure a more inclusive selection process.
In a related development, the Senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University unanimously rejected the Vice-Chancellor advertisement released on September 12, calling for its retraction and the issuance of a new, inclusive advertisement. Concerns were also raised regarding the qualifications of a candidate reportedly supported by the Pro-Chancellor, who had not held significant administrative positions.
The Senate has warned that they may escalate their actions, potentially calling for the dissolution of the governing council, if their concerns are not addressed in a timely manner.
