Covenant University Set to Evolve into Nigeria’s Harvard, Says Bishop Oyedepo

OGUN STATE, 16 October 2024 — Dr. David Oyedepo, Chancellor of Covenant University, has expressed his ambition for the institution to become Nigeria’s equivalent of Harvard University. Speaking at the university’s 19th convocation ceremony over the weekend, he highlighted Covenant’s recent recognition in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025, where it was the only Nigerian university listed among the top 1,000, specifically ranking between 801-1000.

Reflecting on the vision behind establishing Covenant University, Oyedepo stated his determination to create a unique educational environment amidst a national landscape often plagued by strikes and systemic challenges. He drew inspiration from prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford, emphasizing the importance of biblical principles, innovative funding, and program development in shaping the university’s approach.

Dr. Oyedepo noted that since Covenant’s inception in 2002, he has not drawn a salary from the university, asserting that his motivations are rooted in a desire to make a meaningful societal impact rather than personal gain.

He encouraged graduates to become contributors to society, emphasizing that true success comes from finding ways to add value and solve problems. “You are created to be a contributor. You cannot be a contributor and be a failure,” he said.

In his closing remarks, Oyedepo urged the graduates to remain committed to God’s plan for their lives, asserting that such dedication is crucial for a brighter future for Nigeria.
