“ASUU President Reveals 84 Academics Died Due to Economic Hardship, Urges Government Action”

Osodeke’s comments during an interview on Channels Television underscore the devastating impact of the government’s “no-work, no-pay” policy, which exacerbates the financial struggles of lecturers. He pointed out that many academics are grappling with severe economic challenges, making it increasingly difficult to survive.

The call for increased funding and adequate compensation for university staff is urgent. Without these measures, Nigerian lecturers cannot compete effectively on a global scale. Despite ongoing protests and demands for the implementation of agreements dating back to 2009, the government has failed to meet these obligations, including the removal of ASUU from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), payment of outstanding allowances, and revitalization funds.

The continued neglect of these issues has resulted in frequent strikes, leading to significant disruptions in academic activities and tarnishing the reputation of Nigerian public universities. With the rising costs of electricity and operational expenses, many institutions are forced to redirect internally generated revenue just to maintain basic functions.

ASUU’s recent 14-day ultimatum to the government reflects the mounting frustrations and urgent need for dialogue. The current silence from the government is unacceptable, leaving lecturers and their families in a precarious situation. It is crucial for the Federal Government to prioritize education, address these concerns, and restore trust with the academic community.

In light of these challenges, the government must take decisive action, potentially by cutting unnecessary expenditures elsewhere, to ensure that lecturers receive their due compensation. The time for rhetoric has passed; effective, tangible support for Nigeria’s academics is essential to protect the future of the nation’s educational landscape.
