The House of Representatives has initiated a significant move to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, with a bill passing its first reading on Thursday.

Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight other lawmakers, the bill aims to promote the learning and preservation of Nigerian languages and cultures.

According to Section II, Part I of the bill, the proposed university will “encourage the advancement of learning” and provide opportunities for individuals of all backgrounds to pursue higher education in Nigerian languages.

Notably, Section 14 (2) outlines the President’s role, requiring that he conduct a visitation to the university at least once every five years, or delegate this responsibility to appointed individuals. Additionally, the university will be required to provide necessary facilities and assistance during such visitations.

The legislation also grants the President the authority to remove council members, except for the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor.

The university aims to develop and offer various academic programs leading to diplomas and degrees, focusing on fostering skills in Nigerian languages that contribute to national development. It is envisioned to serve as a catalyst for research and innovation, promoting the effective use and conservation of Nigeria’s diverse resources.
