Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya has established a negotiation team to address the ongoing strike by unions at Gombe State University (GSU), which has disrupted academic activities. The strike, involving ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT, has raised concerns among students, parents, and the government.
During the inauguration, the Governor stressed the urgency of resolving the strike, highlighting the government’s commitment to education. He noted that the state has been increasing financial support to GSU, providing over 200 million naira monthly, and addressing previous debts related to Earned Academic Allowances.
Inuwa rejected a proposal to raise student registration fees, aiming to keep education accessible amid economic challenges. He also mentioned a planned endowment fund to support the university, with contributions from philanthropists.
The Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Jatau, leading the negotiation team, called for cooperation from the unions to establish a long-term framework for stability at GSU. The committee comprises various state officials and stakeholders, emphasizing the need for fruitful negotiations to benefit both staff and students.
