ASUU Challenges Bauchi University Over Deaths of Staff Members

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disputed claims by Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) management, which stated that only one staff member has died since the institution’s establishment 12 years ago.

In a statement, ASUU chairperson Dr. Auwal Hussain revealed that at least seven active staff members have passed away without receiving the death benefits mandated by law. He criticized the university for minimizing these losses, saying it sends a troubling message to current staff regarding the value of their contributions.

Hussain named several deceased staff members, including Dr. Abdulqadir Musa Badara, Maryam Zangoma, and others, stressing the importance of recognizing their service.

He expressed concern that this situation could lead to more faculty reconsidering their positions at SAZU, noting that over 30 academic staff have already left for other institutions. “The union will do everything possible until their due benefits are duly paid to them,” Hussain promised.

Additionally, he called for the administration to address outstanding payments related to academic and workload allowances owed to union members, emphasizing the need for accurate accounting of deceased staff to reflect the university’s staffing challenges.
