Public Universities Hold 96% of Nigeria’s Educational Assets, Says UI VC

Ibadan, October 10, 2024 — Professor Kayode Adebowale, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, has highlighted the crucial role of public universities in Nigeria, stating they account for approximately 96% of the nation’s educational assets. This assertion underscores the importance of these institutions in the country’s tertiary education landscape.

Speaking during a visit from the Anatomical Society of Nigeria, led by its national president, Professor Barnabas Danborno, Professor Adebowale emphasized that Nigeria’s 274 universities—62 federal, 63 state, and 149 private—are vital to sustaining the educational system.

The remarks were made in conjunction with the 20th annual scientific conference of the Anatomical Society, themed “Anatomy in Health and Disease: Exploring the Potentials of Microscopy and Anthropometry.” The VC stressed that research, rather than mere physical infrastructure, is the key driver of a university’s success, which is why the University of Ibadan actively supports various academic conferences.

He also acknowledged the contributions of Emeritus Professor Ayodele Babajide Olukoya Desalu, Nigeria’s oldest living anatomist, who remains actively involved in the field at the age of 92. Professor Adebowale praised the collaborative spirit within the Department of Anatomy at UI, highlighting the efforts of both experienced professionals and emerging scholars.

In response, Professor Danborno expressed gratitude to the University of Ibadan for its hospitality and support in hosting the conference, recognizing its vital contributions to the advancement of the scientific community in Nigeria.
