The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill to establish the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, Kaduna South. The decision came during a plenary session on Tuesday, following the consideration of a report from the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.

Senator Mohammed Dandutse Muntari, the committee chairman, presented the findings from a public hearing that gathered insights from various stakeholders. He emphasized that the new university will significantly enhance educational infrastructure and equip students with practical and theoretical knowledge in technology, applied sciences, and management.

“The establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia will contribute to addressing environmental challenges and improving professional studies in technology,” Senator Dandutse stated. He further noted that the university aims to produce graduates ready to tackle issues related to productivity, information management, and security.

The senator highlighted that the initiative could also help mitigate economic challenges and reduce criminal activities by providing youth with valuable skills and knowledge. He urged the Senate to support the bill, which aims to foster national integration and social progress among Nigeria’s diverse youth population.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Sunday Marshall Katung (Kaduna South) and previously passed its second reading before being referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND on May 7, 2024. The committee conducted a public hearing that received substantial backing from community leaders and stakeholders in Kaduna South, including traditional rulers.

The passage of this bill marks a significant step toward expanding higher education opportunities in Nigeria and addressing the country’s pressing educational needs.
