MDCAN Expresses Concerns Over Exclusion from UNIZIK Vice Chancellor Selection Process

Jos, October 9, 2024 – The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has voiced strong objections regarding the exclusion of its members from the selection process for the vacant Vice Chancellor position at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State. The association described the advertisement for the position as “unjust and discriminatory.”

In a statement issued in Jos and signed by MDCAN President Professor Mohammad Aminu and Secretary Professor Daiyabu Ibrahim, the organization emphasized the essential role that its members play in both the academic and administrative leadership of the university. They argued that the exclusion undermines the university’s mission to produce competent healthcare professionals vital to national and global health systems.

“The exclusion of our members, who are distinguished scholars and experienced administrators in both academic and clinical settings, conveys a message that their contributions to the university’s growth are undervalued,” the statement read. MDCAN warned that such decisions could lead to a breakdown in academic collaboration, diminish morale, and ultimately impact the quality of Medical and Dental education at UNIZIK.

MDCAN has called on the Governing Council of UNIZIK and other stakeholders to retract the current advertisement for the Vice Chancellor position and ensure adequate representation for all academic disciplines, particularly in the Medical and Dental fields.

The association reiterated its commitment to fostering academic excellence and leadership within Nigerian universities. They urged a prompt resolution to the situation, emphasizing their intention to monitor developments closely and prevent the matter from escalating into a crisis.
