Saudi Arabia to Oversee Food and Accommodation for Nigerian Pilgrims from 2025

Starting in 2025, Saudi Arabian companies will take charge of the food and accommodation arrangements for all Nigerian pilgrims during the Hajj, according to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). This new policy by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah aims to standardize services for pilgrims worldwide.

Previously, these companies, known as Mu’assasa, were only responsible for feeding and accommodating pilgrims in Muna during the five-day procession known as Masha’ir. However, the extension of their role throughout the entire pilgrimage period has raised concerns among Nigerian pilgrims who are used to local cuisine.

In response to these concerns, NAHCON’s Commissioner of Operation, Prince Anofi Olanrewaju Elegushi, assured state Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards (MPWB) of the commission’s commitment to aligning with the new Saudi Hajj calendar and urged for cooperation among all stakeholders.

The announcement came during a virtual meeting on September 23, 2024, where it was revealed that the policy would apply to all participating countries. Elegushi highlighted the importance of collaboration and praised state officials for their proactive measures regarding Hajj deposits.

Despite the introduction of this new policy, there have been calls for NAHCON to address issues such as the Hajj Savings Scheme, National Medical Team policies, and pending refunds from the 2024 Hajj. Malam Idris Almakura, Chairman of the Forum of States and Executive Secretary of the Nasarawa State Pilgrims’ Board, commended NAHCON’s efforts but urged for continued attention to these unresolved matters.
