Aba, Nigeria — In a heartfelt tribute to a fallen hero, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has pledged to provide scholarships up to the university level for the six children of Police Inspector Shehu Oyibo, who was tragically killed during an attack by unknown gunmen on June 21. The incident occurred when Oyibo and his colleagues from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) were on patrol along Ngwa Road by Mosque Junction in Aba.
The late Inspector Oyibo was targeted by gunmen traveling in a Sienna vehicle. The violent assault not only claimed his life but also resulted in the deaths of three other innocent civilians who were caught in the crossfire between the police and the attackers.
During a visit to the Aba North local government area headquarters, Governor Otti expressed his deep condolences to the widow of Inspector Oyibo and the Commander of the RRS. He emphasized the state government’s commitment to supporting the bereaved family, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Inspector Oyibo, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. In recognition of his service and to support his family, we are providing scholarships for his six children up to the university level.”
This gesture from the Governor comes amid reports of alleged indiscriminate arrests of innocent residents in the Ngwa Road area by police following the attack. The Abia Command of the Nigeria Police Force has yet to provide details regarding any arrests or further actions related to the incident.
Governor Otti’s initiative is viewed as a significant measure to honor the legacy of Inspector Oyibo and to offer stability and support to his family during this difficult period.
