The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) in Awka experienced a dramatic turn of events on Saturday, July 27, 2024, as the institution’s community witnessed unexpected developments regarding its leadership.
Amid speculation about the possible removal of Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joe Ikechebelu, and a scheduled meeting of the newly constituted governing council led by Amb. Greg Mbadiwe, the university was unexpectedly invaded by heavily armed soldiers.
Upon arrival at the university, this reporter encountered a blocked gate due to the military presence but managed to reach the administration building where tension was palpable. The chairman of the council, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe, was seen arriving and engaging with Prof. Ikechebelu before proceeding to the council chambers.
Rumors had circulated that the council meeting was not scheduled for that day, following a Senate meeting the previous day that controversially shortlisted two professors for the position of acting Vice Chancellor. The Senate, comprising only 30 out of over 500 members, was criticized for its legitimacy and the process of shortlisting candidates.
Despite these concerns, the council meeting proceeded but ended abruptly in chaos. Afterward, outside the council chambers, Amb. Mbadiwe, flanked by soldiers, presented an appointment letter to Prof. Carol Arinze-Umeobi as the new acting Vice Chancellor, in what some described as a pre-planned move.
Critics have condemned the replacement of an acting Vice Chancellor with another acting Vice Chancellor rather than appointing a substantive head. They have also raised concerns about the legality and process of the replacement.
In response, Amb. Mbadiwe issued a press release clarifying the situation. He stated that Prof. Ikechebelu was never officially appointed as Acting Vice Chancellor but had overseen the role temporarily. He explained that the council’s decision was made to prevent constitutional issues and maintain order at the university.
The press release also announced that Prof. Arinze-Umeobi would serve a non-renewable term of six months and would not participate in the search for a substantive Vice Chancellor. The council has advised Prof. Ikechebelu to hand over to Prof. Arinze-Umeobi immediately, with any failure to comply considered an act of insubordination.
The university has since returned to a semblance of calm, with Prof. Ikechebelu transitioning back to his previous role as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration. The Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor on Media, Dr. Emma Ojukwu, confirmed that Prof. Arinze-Umeobi would now lead the university while the search for a substantive Vice Chancellor continues.
Dr. Ojukwu assured that the council’s actions were in the best interest of the university’s stability and progress.
