In response to the ongoing nationwide protests, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has issued a directive to Vice Chancellors to prioritize the security and safety of university staff and students.
According to a circular released by Chris Maiyaki, Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), on July 28, the minister emphasized the need for universities to take proactive measures to protect their communities.
“The Federal Government is not unaware of the rights of any Nigerian to peaceful protest but is concerned about the safety of staff, students, and university property should there be any protest action,” the circular stated.
Prof. Mamman’s directive includes:
- Ensuring the safety and security of the university community.
- Issuing specific statements to reassure staff and students of their safety.
- Advising students to remain on campus and concentrate on their academic pursuits to avoid potential dangers during the protests.
The circular aims to mitigate risks associated with the planned demonstrations and maintain a secure environment within Nigerian universities.
