University of Ibadan Appoints UBA’s GMD/CEO, Mr. Oliver Alawuba, as Ambassador in Commemoration of 75th Anniversary

In celebration of its seventy-five years of existence, the University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria’s premier university, has conferred the title of Ambassador upon Mr. Oliver Alawuba, the Group Managing Director/CEO of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc. This prestigious recognition is a testament to Alawuba’s outstanding contributions and achievements in the banking industry, coupled with his advocacy for the university’s cause within the corporate landscape.

Professor Kayode Adebowale, the Vice Chancellor of the university, announced the appointment during a visit to UBA House, Marina, on Thursday. He highlighted the significant milestones achieved by the university, expressing that the UI@75 celebration aims to garner interest in a year-long participatory program concluding in November 2024. The program seeks to enhance the institution and provide scholarship opportunities for more students.

As part of the celebration, UI identified and designated several alumni as UI@75 Ambassadors, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, and Mr. Oliver Alawuba. Professor Adebowale commended Alawuba, who is an alumnus of the university, for his over 20 years of banking experience and his alignment with the virtues for which UI is renowned. He envisioned a collaborative synergy between UI and UBA not only in Nigeria but also across Africa and globally.

Expressing gratitude for the conferred title, Mr. Alawuba encouraged Nigerian universities to establish collaborations within the private sector, emphasizing the importance of reducing reliance on government funding. He pledged UBA’s commitment to championing collaboration with universities toward sustainable development, highlighting the bank’s pan-African presence and global reach.

The Chairman of UI@75 and Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration of University of Ibadan, Professor Peter Olapegba, outlined the year-long activities planned for the event and sought private sector support for the Six-Point Development Initiative of the university’s current administration.

With a career spanning over 25 years in the financial services sector, Mr. Oliver Alawuba has achieved significant milestones and played a pivotal role in shaping the banking landscape across Africa. Currently serving as the GMD/CEO for UBA Plc, he oversees the global operations of the bank, delivering exceptional financial performance and maintaining a customer-first philosophy.
